Inside Look- Hair Steaming

What is hair steaming? This service is defined as “the process of using moist heat to help open the follicle, lift the cuticle on the hair shaft & allow conditioner & treatments to penetrate each strand to allow better absorption of water. It also opens the pores of the scalp to remove impurities & product build up.”

Can hair steaming cause heat damage? When done properly, no, hair steaming will not damage your hair. Heat damage typically refers to heated implements such as blow dryers, flat irons, curling wands, etc that use dry, direct heat to your hair. this process uses water vapors to open the cuticle of the hair shaft while depositing moisture to help your hair. while steaming is recommended regularly (about once a week), over excessive steaming may be detrimental. Please consult your stylist (hopefully me….) for your own specific steaming routine!

Why should you steam your hair? Benefits of hair steaming include increase blood circulation to the scalp which promotes growth. If you have dry, itchy, or flaky scalp, this is the perfect service for you as it calms the scalp by decreasing irritation & dryness. Steaming has also proven to be an amazingly simple way of softening your curls while aiding in intense moisture. This in turn helps aid hair elasticity (your hair ability to stretch & revert to its original pattern without breaking). This is highly recommended for hair that has been damaged by excessive heat or chemical processing such as perms, relaxers, & color services. Those with any form of seborrhea (overactive sebum glands on the scalp causing excessive oiliness) benefit with consistent steaming as it removes dirt & grease on a deeper level. Low porosity also hair THRIVES with hair streaming. Low porosity struggles to absorb moisture; any hair type can have a low porosity. Don’t know your hair type or porosity level? Book a consultation under the “Book Online” tab. Steaming has also proven to add shine & luster to dull hair. Typically oil is used to give hair a shine. This can be detrimental if your hair internally is dry. Oil will lock the dryness into t he shaft. This service replaces the need for oil to cosmetically (surface level appearance) cover hair dryness & adresses the root of the cause. With consistency, hair growth & elasticity will increase exponentially & help manageability of your hair.
