Life Changing Consistency
Ok so let’s get straight into. Chair hopping is a huge thing in the beauty industry. I can’t fault you all because everyone’s got a different environment, method, amenities, trendy look, etc. Hey everybody has a niche & everybody needs to eat. I FULLY support all small businesses, especially if they’re owned by black folks (honorable mention to the black women!) I feature products from black businesses in all of my protective styling, so I completely understand wanting to support everybody. But let’s get to the knitty gritty…
Consistency is key! It’s a saying as old as time but is so true! For starters, our bodies thrive off routine. Our digestive system functions best when we have regular eating schedules. Our brain (and bodies overall) thrives when we have consistent sleep patterns. Even plants grow better when watering schedules are consistent, not sporadically. Our hair is no different. Having a regular steaming, moisturizing, oiling routine is essential to healhty, happy hair. For those with locs, going to different stylists is probably stunting your growth or resulting in thinning. The main function of locs is NOT knotting. The main function of hair locking is to train your hair to grow in one spirals (which RESULTS in compact strands. Each loctician has a different way of twisting your hair. Manipulating your hair in different ways each time results in knotting, uneven locs, & thinning. For best results, consistent twisting styles will help loc your hair faster & sturdier because your hair will better adjust to growing in a set circular motion.
In addition to this, your stylist can be your first line of defense in spotting diseases. Our skin is an organ. Our skin (along with the hair that grows out of) is typically the first thing affected when illness presents itself of the body. Abnormal lesions, moles changing shapes, or discoloration can be indications. Now ask yourself this… How often do you see the back of your head? How often do you see what’s going on with your scalp under all that hair? How do you know if your mole slightly changes shapes when you see it every day? How will your stylist know when you go to a different person each time? My cosmetology instructor told me the story of the time she had one of her regulars in her chair & she noticed her scalp looked a little off. She saw a small bump that just usually isn't there. Now as cosmetologist we can’t medically diagnose anyone, but she suggested her client visit her primary care doctor. She was diagnosed with cancer and was able to get treated since it was caught early. This just goes to show that having someone watching your back can go a long way… and that can only be done when you’re consistent! So… book Missy 202 for all your hair & self care needs! <3
